You may notice the proliferation of Substacks these past few months. It seems like EVERYONE is jumping into the water. Elizabeth Gilbert, Margaret Atwood, Cheryl Strayed. Here’s the thing. I was on here before all of them! I guess great minds…
Anyway, I’m pleased to have them join the party, but I hope Substack is not overwhelming you. I’m subscribed to like 50 newsletters but I only pay for about 10 of those. My first ever Substack subscription was for Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters From An American (if you don’t get that one, sign up ASAP). It’s the first thing I read every day.
There are reasons that I pay for certain Substacks, like Laurie Stone’s Everything is Personal. Laurie gives me added value, a reason to pay her $5 a month. She offers free Zoom calls every few months to paid subscribers to talk about the craft of writing and learn from her infinite wisdom. I love those calls.
If you are a free subscriber here that’s fine. After all, I’ve been sending this newsletter out since the birth of my new-age bookstore, breathe books. (2004 - 2014. May she rest in peace) Thousands of you have been reading for free for decades. And many of you have converted to paid and I thank you so much.
So why pay? You will be the first to know about my domestic and international retreats, which is important because I like to keep my groups intimate with only 8 to 10 people. Also, you can get early-bird pricing and save $100s! Here’s what’s in the works for 2024: Write & Roam Retreats around the world. West, East and really far East! We will go to mysterious and magical Joshua Tree, California, the gorgeous Casa Om Potomac in West Virginia, and a spectacular tour of Bhutan! We hike, we write, we meditate, we move, and we form a special bond as we experience the world together. You can sign up for a free newsletter or take advantage of the subscription to be the first to know. Use this link to get the special discount here:
Want to know what my writing groups are like? Join me Friday mornings, January 5 through January 26 at Manor Mill in Monkton, Maryland. My classes are fun, inspiring, and encouraging. We meditate, write to a prompt, and share. It’s simple yet deep. Like life can be sometimes! One of the benefits I’ve seen come out of these writing groups, which I’ve been leading since 2020, is that people are striking up incredible friendships just from writing together. It’s that powerful. Come see why. Sign up ASAP and let’s write into the new year together! https://ManorMillRegistration.as.me/?appointmentType=50727303
